Unpaid Care, Domestic and Communal Work
Unpaid care work is gendered across all countries with women globally on average doing 2-3 times as much as men, with stark inequalities even higher in many SIDS, LDC, high-conflict and low-medium income countries. ILO figures show women performing 76.2 percent of total hours of unpaid care work and in Asia and the Pacific, this rises to 80 per cent. Despite some increase in men’s unpaid care work in the past 2 decades, the gender gap in unpaid care time-use declined by just 7 minutes per day over the last 20 years. At this rate it would take over 200 years to close the gap. With COVID-19 and climate change loss and damage in climate frontline states including Fiji, the extent to which these small gains remain, is debatable. With the added strain on household income and public services, unpaid and poorly paid care, domestic and communal work that women have always done are underpinning COVID-19 response. The same applies as loss and damage levels rise in climate frontline countries like Fiji.
